Draw three working zones

Set aside clear areas for keep, possible reuse, and remove. Use the fourth category, special handling, for chemicals, batteries, paint, fuel, propane, and unidentified containers.

Start with obvious decisions

Begin with empty boxes, broken ordinary household goods, and items everyone agrees can go. Delay sentimental or shared items until the right person can decide.

Keep the exit usable

Work from the back of the garage toward the door without blocking the center aisle. Do not stack loose items where they can fall into the route.

List the heavy and unusual items

Photograph workbenches, exercise equipment, appliances, long materials, and anything attached to the wall or floor. Ask before including construction debris.

Check local rules for special materials

Seattle’s Where Does It Go tool and transfer-station guidance separate many batteries, fuels, paints, electronics, and other materials from ordinary garbage. Keep them isolated until you have a confirmed destination.

Your next step

Use the checklist to build a clear request, then compare the municipal option with a private pickup based on access, timing, and item count. For service help, review garage cleanout or prepare an estimate request.
