Record the furniture size
Measure width, depth, and height at the widest fixed points. Note removable legs, leaves, cushions, glass, or shelves without assuming the crew will disassemble the piece.
Find the narrowest opening
Measure door openings with the door in its usable position. Include handles, trim, railings, and any corner immediately before or after the opening.
Check turns and vertical clearance
A long piece needs room to rotate. Photograph stair landings, low ceilings, switchbacks, and the approach to an elevator.
Describe material and condition
Solid wood, sleeper mechanisms, glass tops, metal frames, and water damage change weight and handling. Mention loose parts, broken edges, pests, or contamination before pickup.
Plan the destination without promising it
Usable condition may open a reuse option, but acceptance depends on a receiving organization’s rules and capacity. Ask the provider how condition affects the plan.
Your next step
Use the checklist to build a clear request, then compare the municipal option with a private pickup based on access, timing, and item count. For service help, review furniture removal or prepare an estimate request.
